LinkedIn is continuing its push to encourage job seekers to apply for fewer, more targeted roles—but this time, it’s rolling out AI-powered upgrades to make the process smarter.
The platform is introducing a revamped search tool designed to help users find more relevant job postings. Previously, LinkedIn’s search relied heavily on keyword matching. Now, AI will analyze job listings more deeply, allowing job hunters to use natural language in their searches.
“Search used to be very specific—you had to hope the system understood the exact title, keyword, or skill you entered,” explains LinkedIn product manager Rohan Rajiv. “Now, you can just say what you want, and the system will understand.”
While this may seem like a small change, it’s a significant upgrade. Users can still search for broad terms like “product manager,” but they can also input more nuanced queries, such as “business development roles in the video game industry.”
LinkedIn is also adding transparency features, like indicators showing when a company is actively reviewing applications. Premium subscribers will get access to AI-powered job coaching, including practice interview questions and pitch feedback.
Still, AI can only do so much. Rajiv acknowledges that job seekers outnumber available positions, and his advice—applying to fewer, better-matched roles—isn’t always popular. “Volume isn’t your friend in a job search,” he says. “One extra application might seem harmless, but multiply that by 500, and suddenly the hiring team is overwhelmed.”
Looking ahead, Rajiv envisions LinkedIn guiding users even more precisely. “We could say, ‘This job isn’t a fit, but based on your skills, here’s a tailored search.’ That’s the future.”
